The Bahujan Samaj Party cadres staged a token hunger strike here demanding reservation for Scheduled Castes in promotions. The protesters, seeking quotas for Scheduled Castes in promotions, demanded the passage of the Bill pending in the Parliament.

Earlier, in December, the Constitution Amendment Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha, amid opposition from the BJP and Samajwadi Party, with the latter demanding a bill for reservation for Muslims. The Constitution (117th Amendment) Bill, when passed will have a retrospective effect.

According to the protesting BSP cadres, the representation of SCs in decision making ranks was low, and the skewed ratio in proportion to the population of SC/STs needed to be rectified. The bill would enable representation of SCs up to 13 per cent primarily in Group A and Group B services.
