VELLORE: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has decided to launch 3G mobile service in Vellore district, covering Vellore Town, Katpadi, Sathuvachari and Bagayam areas from May 31.

According to a release from the General Manager, BSNL, Vellore, the company has installed base trans-receiver system (BTS) that supports 3G service in 20 BSNL towers in the following places: Salavanpet, Sathuvachari, Vallalar, Sainathapuram, Kangeyanallur, Ezhilnagar, R.N. Palayam, Vellore Town, Lakshmi Theatre, CMC, Sathuvachari, Katpadi Exchange, Katpadi MCU, Vellore Exchange, Bagayam, Konavattam, Sathuvachari Exchange, Sunnambukkara Street and VIT. The 3G service would be available beyond the town limits based on demands and requests.

The salient feature of 3G service is that it has high speed Internet, which is available up to 3.6 mbps speed. Though there is a special SIM card called USIM for 3G service, customers could switch from 2G to 3G by simply sending SMS (M3G 120) to 53733 with the existing SIM card. Voice calls would be at the rate of 2G services, data download @ one paisa per 10 KB in 3G services. Video calls could be made with lower rates. Mobile TV service would also be available.
