Vellore, Tiruvannamalai to benefit before year-end
New landline connections to be given on demand
BSNL has invited applications from members of public to work as Direct Selling Agents
VELLORE: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is planning to introduce the facility of online payment of bills in the Vellore Secondary Switching Area (SSA) comprising Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts before the end of this year, according to P.T. Mathew, General Manager, BSNL, Vellore.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Mathew said that the BSNL plans to provide one lakh global system for mobile communications (GMS) connections, 30,000 fixed wireless terminal (FWT) connections, 12,000 broadband connections and 10,000 landlines in the Vellore SSA during the current financial year. New landline connections would be given on demand. GSM towers would be installed wherever necessary. While at present there were 138 GSM base trans-receiver stations (BTS) or towers in the SSA, handling 1,13,738 prepaid and 12,535 post-paid mobile connections, the BSNL is planning to commission another 90 GSM towers before July. Another 100 towers would be commissioned before 2009. While there were 55 Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) towers at present, another 10 towers are proposed in the SSA, Mr. Mathew said.
While Broadband facility has been provided in 65 exchanges in the Vellore SSA, the BSNL has programmed to commission the facility in another 60 stations providing rural broadband facility with a capacity of 64 lines each during the current month. Broadband facility would be provided in all the remaining exchanges during 2008-2009.
The minimum broadband plan is Home 125 in which Rs.125 would be charged per month. The fixed monthly charges for unlimited usage would be Rs.750.
More WLL EVDO BTS
Mr. Mathew said the BSNL has proposed four more WLL EVDO (Evolution Data Optimised) BTS.
While a WLL EVDO BTS was already available in Katpadi exchange, it would be commissioned soon in Vellore, Sathuvachari, BHEL and Tiruvannamalai. High speed Internet is available for all WLL customers, and a fixed monthly charge of Rs.250 would be levied for unlimited usage at a speed of 144 kbps. National Informatics Centre (NIC)/EVDO cards, which could be fixed to a laptop computer for activating mobile Internet facility, are available in Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts in all places where WLL coverage is available.
A fixed monthly charge of Rs.250 would be levied for unlimited usage of an NIC data card. EVDO service at 2 MB speed is available in Katpadi.
Mr. Mathew said the BSNL has invited applications from the public to work as Direct Selling Agents (DSA) in the Vellore SSA.
These DSAs could market all types of BSNL services at attractive commission.
Mr. Mathew said the BSNL has slashed the charges for STD calls from landline to landline/WLL and landline to mobile by 50 per cent.
Charges for local calls and within 50 km within Tamil Nadu would be 40 paise per minute (pulse rate 180 seconds per unit) for landline to landline/WLL and 60 paise per minute (120 seconds per unit) for a distance of more than 50 km for landline to landline/WLL within the State. The landline to landline/WLL charges for STD calls within India would be Rs.1.20 per minute (60 seconds per unit). Local calls and calls within and more than 50 km within Tamil Nadu for landline to mobile would be charged at 60 paise per minute (120 seconds per unit), while STD calls from landline to mobile within India would be charged at Rs.1.20 per minute (60 seconds per unit).
There would be no registration or installation charges for new phone connections booked up to July 29.
The mandatory deposit amount for these connections would be collected in four instalments.
