It offers download speed upto 4 mbps for rental of Rs. 750
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) recently launched wi-max service, high-speed wireless broadband facility without landline, at Alanganallur exchange.
The signal from wi-max was so powerful that even subscribers along boundary areas of the city had got wi-max connections, BSNL General Manager (Madurai) S.E. Rajam said.
The wi-max offered download speed of 1.7 mbps to 4 mbps, which is more than double the normal broadband speed. People can get unlimited download for a monthly rental of Rs. 750. They need to pay an additional Rs. 40 a month for Wi-max modem. Though there is no installation charge, subscribers need to pay a deposit of Rs. 750.
The signal is available in Koodal Nagar, Surya Nagar, Bama Nagar, Sikkander Chavadi, Tirupalai and K. Pudur. The capacity of the Alanganallur exchange wi-max is 1,000 connections.
“The service was intended to give broadband facility to rural areas where cable-laying was not feasible. But, with the kind of positive response we have got from the city subscribers, we have requested our higher-ups to permit the service to the city also,” Ms. Rajam said.
One more wi-max tower would be put up at Ellis Nagar to cater to the city. It is expected to be commissioned by the month-end.
The facility would also come up at Melur, Perungudi, Kalligudi, Samayanallur, Karupayurani, Batlagundu, Dindigul, Gandamanur, Keeranur, Kottampatti, Oddanchatiram, Sedapatti, Sithaiyankottai, Vedasandur, Amarapoondi, Bodi, Chellampatti, and Nilakottai.
