Central staff to strike

MADURAI: The Joint Action Council of Central Government employees on Friday announced a nationwide general strike beginning on March 1.

According to its convener, N. Kanniah, the employees were firm on the agitation and would serve the strike notice on February 7. "We have exhausted all appeal options and there is no looking back now. Though the wage revision is due since 2003, there is no indication of the Sixth Pay Commission. This only shows the Centre's utter disregard to the workers' right." Mr. Kanniah, who is also the general secretary of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, said the JAC had submitted a memorandum to former Chief Minister and Democratic Progressive Alliance leader M. Karunanidhi, seeking his intervention.The Centre has let the issue stretch too far and any negotiation with union leaders should be before February 7," he said. - Staff Reporter

Vanniyar Sangam seeks quota in Central jobs

CHENNAI: The Vanniyar Sangam has demanded job reservation for candidates belonging to the community in Central institutions.

In a memorandum to Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Friday, the Sangam said there was no representation for the community in Central Government and public sector undertakings. Quota for backward classes should be made in institutions of higher studies managed by the Centre.

The Sangam wanted the Government to constitute a body that would bring under its control property belonging to the community and presently managed by voluntary organisations.

It wanted a statue of former Union Minister Vazhapadi K. Ramamurthi should be installed at a central location in Chennai. - Special Correspondent

Teachers' recruitment

CHENNAI: The Teachers Recruitment Board will conduct a written competitive examination on February 26 for recruitment to 193 posts of senior lecturer/lecturer for Government engineering colleges and polytechnics. Application forms can be had from the offices of chief educational officers of all districts on payment of Rs. 600 by demand draft drawn in favour of 'Teachers Recruitment Board, Chennai.' The last date for submission of filled in applications is February 2, says an official release. - Special Correspondent

Exam results

CHENNAI: The results of the examination for the certificate course in computer on office automation, conducted last month by the Department of Technical Education, will be published on Saturday. They will be displayed on the notice board of the Directorate of Technical Education and at all the examination centres. They can be viewed on the website (www.tndte.com) .

The certificates will be sent shortly to the qualified candidates, says an official release. - Special Correspondent

Headmaster found murdered

NAGAPATTINAM: Sekar (55), headmaster of Government Higher Secondary School at Nangoor near Sirkazhi, was found murdered near Athukudi on Thursday.

Police sources said while Mr. Sekar was going to the school on a two-wheeler for participating in the Republic Day function, a group waylaid and hacked him to death. The Sirkazhi police have registered a case. The accused are at large.

Mr. Sekar, who was working as headmaster of Government High School at Kuthalam, was recently transferred to Government HSS at Nangoor. His wife Kasthuri is the headmistress of Government Higher Secondary School at Mayiladuturai. - Staff Reporter
