4 die in explosion in fireworks unitSIVAKASI: Four workers, including a woman, were crushed to death in a roof collapse triggered by an explosion in a fireworks unit on the outskirts of Sivakasi town on Thursday.
The victims, identified as S. Nagaiah (52), M. Ulagammal (40), S. Chinnadurai (40) and M. Muthuraj (38), were cutting `cap rolls'. The concrete roof of the shed caved in crushing them to death on the spot, the Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police, S.N. Seshasai, said. However, other sheds on the premises were not damaged.
While Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service personnel removed three bodies immediately, the fourth one could be extricated after two hours with the help of an earthmover. Staff Reporter
TNGEA officials meet Chief SecretaryCHENNAI: Office-bearers of the Tamilnadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) on Thursday met the Chief Secretary, N. Narayanan, at the Secretariat and expressed their anxiety over the delay in release of promotion lists of various departments. They also narrated the problems likely to be encountered by government officials during the election work.
The office-bearers also met the Special Chief Electoral Officer, C.P. Singh, and requested him to give permission to election duty officials to exercise postal ballot and increase their daily allowance. Special Correspondent
Special trainsCHENNAI: Southern Railway will operate following special trains between Chennai Egmore and Nagercoil.
Train no. 0611 will leave Chennai Egmore at 8 pm on April 21 and reach Nagercoil at 10 am the next day. In the return direction train no. 0612 will leave Nagercoil at 1.30 pm on April 23 and arrive Egmore at 4.30 am the next day.
The composition of the train will be one AC 2-tier, two AC 3-tier, 10 sleeper class, 3 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. It will stop at Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Kodaikanal Road, Madurai, Tirumangalam, Virudunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Vanchi Maniyachchi and Tirunelveli. Train no. 0612 will stop at Mambalam also. Advance reservation for the above trains will commence on April 21. Special Correspondent
Change in train timingsCHENNAI: From April 21 (Friday) train no 2615 Chennai Central-New Delhi Grand Trunk Express will leave Chennai Central at 4.30 pm instead of 7 pm, according to a railway press release.
Southern Railway on Wednesday convened a meeting with freight customers to highlight the new freight incentives and schemes announced by the Railway Ministry in the recent budget with effect from April 1.
About 30 freight customers representing cement, fertilizer, oil and iron and steel industries attended the meeting.
A PowerPoint presentation was made about the salient features of the freight incentive schemes.
