NLC disinvestment: DK agitation todayTIRUNELVELI: Protesting the Centre's decision to relinquish the shares of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) would stage a demonstration in Neyveli on June 28, party president K. Veeramani, has said.

Speaking to reporters at Courtallam on Monday, Mr. Veeramani, who had come to participate the party's `Periyariyal Payirchi Mugaam,' said the Union Government should immediately stop its move to sell shares of profit-making units such as NLC.

Condemning the "attack" on Tamil areas in Sri Lanka, he said the island nation was playing a "double role," as it was "pounding Tamil areas with aerial bombing" while holding peace talks.

He said a month-long campaign to propagate the ideals of the party would commence on July 14.

Teacher educators meetTuticorin: A meeting of Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTEs) working in 13 Block Resource Centres functioning under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) was held here on Tuesday.

S.G. Kumaradoss, Assistant District Programme Co-ordinator of SSA, briefed BRTEs of their functions and detailed them methods that needed to be followed to enhance competitiveness. SASTRA counselling concludesThanjavur: Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) retained its top position as the most popular branch this year for admission to B.Tech programme at Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Acadedmy (SASTRA).

According to S.Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean Planning, all the seats in ECE branch were filled on the June 22, 2006, the first day of counselling. The cut-off mark for ECE was 1,106. The seat matrix was displayed on screens erected at various places. It was updated regularly. The counselling ended on Sunday.

Clarification on waiver of crop loansCHENNAI: The State Government has made it clear that waiving of crop loans would not in any way affect the functioning of cooperative banks and the Government would continue to give crop loans to farmers.

In an official statement here on Tuesday, the Government said while writing off loans of Rs. 6,866 crore, it had said that the amount would be returned to cooperative banks in five years through instalments. In the first phase it had given Rs. 100 crore to the banks for disbursement. It was ready to give more funds if necessary. Besides it was taking steps to get refinance for the cooperative banks from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. So far the cooperative banks had given loans to the tune of Rs. 130 crore, including Rs. 30 crore from their own funds, the statement added. Special Correspondent

In a statement here, she said the leaders had been holding discussions with her on the issue for the past two years. Referring to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's remark that Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders had clarified that she would not be part of the third front, she said she had not stated that the CPI (M) leaders had spoken to her on forming a third alternative. Special supplementary examCHENNAI: Special supplementary examinations for students who failed in the S.S.L.C. and O.S.L.C examinations held in April this year (and examinations conducted in previous years) will be held from July 6 to July 15 this year. A Directorate of Government Examinations release said candidates who have registered themselves for the examinations could collect their hall tickets from July 3 to 5 from their schools.
