One killed in accidentTIRUNELVELI: One person was killed and another one injured in a road accident near here on Tuesday.
The police said K. Harikumar (40) of Pattamadai and C. Balakrishnan of Melapalayam were going on the Tirunelveli-Sankarankovil stretch on Tuesday in a two-wheeler. When they were about to reach Kaanaarpatti junction, the bike dashed against a roadside tree in which Harikumar was killed on the spot and Balakrishnan had been admitted to a private hospital here.
The Maanur police are investigating.
Man arrested on forgery chargeTuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested M Palaian (55) on a charge of selling a piece of land owned by M. Amrbose using forged documents.
The police said the accused sold the two-acre land owned by Ambrose, a retired industrial worker, situated at Maravanmadom near here to Suresh Ravikumar for Rs.15 lakh on December 8, 2005, after forging the documents. The accused was remanded to judicial custody.
House burgledTuticorin: The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons, who allegedly burgled a house at Kovilpatti on Monday. They decamped with 11 sovereigns of jewels.
Samuel and his family were away to Velankanni to offer prayers. On his return it was found that doors were open and jewels missing. The Kovilpatti East police are investigating.
Ration rice seizedRamanathapuram: Flying squad officials on Tuesday seized 13 bags of rations rice at Enathi Vilakku in the district. Sources said some unidentified persons abandoned the ration rice bags following information that flying squad was searching for the smugglers. Staff Reporter
Pollution control board's appealThanjavur: Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has appealed to the people to use only Vijayaka idols made of clay which are not baked not and without colours for the coming Vinayaka Chathurthi festival. This was to avoid pollution in water resources while immersing the idols. Idols should be taken half-a-km inside the sea for immersion, an official press release said.

Elephant electrocutedERODE: An elephant died of electrocution here on Sunday. According to the police, Marappan, a farmer of Kodipuram near Thalawady, had raised sugarcane and turmeric on his land. He had erected electric fence around the land.
On Sunday night an elephant was electrocuted when it tried to enter the field. District Forest Officer S. Ramasubramaniam and other officials rushed to the spot. Veterinary doctors conducted the post-mortem of the elephant.

Case against former Minister adjournedERODE: Former Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P. C. Ramasamy appeared before Judicial Magistrate Kamal Basha here on Tuesday in connection with a case registered by the Revenue Divisional Officer, Erode. The RDO complained that Mr. Ramasamy, who was also the district AIADMK secretary, included a number of bogus voters in the electoral roll. Illicit arrack seized, 30 arrestedKrishnagiri: Thirty people, including 10 women, were arrested on Tuesday on the charge of brewing arrack. Water scheme: Centre seeks funds from JapanCHENNAI: The Hogenekkal integrated drinking water supply scheme for Dhramapuri and Krishnagiri districts got a boost with the Centre writing to the Japanese Government requesting it to sanction funds from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for the Rs. 1,005 crore scheme.
An official release here said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written a letter to Chief Minister Karunanidhi stating that the Centre wrote to the Japanese Government recommending the release of funds from the JBIC.
The project envisaged drawing of 160 million litres of water a day from river Cauvery at Hogenekkal, about 45 km from Dharmapuri to provide protected drinking water to people of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Special Correspondent
Promote fruit juices: PMKCHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has urged the States to encourage consumption of fruit juices such as tender coconut water and sugarcane juice.
In a statement, S. Ramadoss, PMK founder, said the Governments should produce the juices and distribute them.
He called for a total ban on the sale of two brands of soft drinks, in the light of a study by a non-governmental organisation on the drinks. Special Correspondent

Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapurm special (via Coimbatore): Train no 0635 will leave Central at 8.30 p.m. on August 11 and reach Thiruvanathapuram at 1.30 p.m., the next day. Congress workers stage road rokoTuticorin: Tension prevailed for an hour in the town on Tuesday as Congress cadres resorted to road roko in front of the A V M Hospital, where Tirunelveli MP Dhanushkodi Athithan was hospitalised. The workers demanded advanced treatment for their leader immediately.
The cadres got `agitated' after it was announced by the authorities concerned that the chartered flight, which was meant to carry Mr. Athithan to Chennai on Tuesday morning for advanced medical care, got cancelled. They said the Centre should take steps to take Mr. Athithan in a defence aircraft to Chennai on Tuesday itself.
They further demanded a team of doctors from super specialty hospitals be stationed in the town to attend to him, till he was taken to Chennai. Medical officials at the A V M Hospital told mediapersons that the condition of Mr. Athithan was stable and it has improved a little. Staff Reporter
