One-year RI for insurance officials
CHENNAI: The Additional Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai, on Tuesday sentenced a Divisional Manager and a Record Clerk of United India Insurance Company in Chennai to one year rigorous imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs.80,000 each in a case registered by the Anti-Corruption Branch, CBI.
The prosecution case was that J. Vasanth Kumar, Divisional Manager, and R.S. Harishankar, Record Clerk, and S. Mahadevan, Proprietor, Sri Balajee Stationery, Chennai, conspired to cheat the insurance company. Following this, Harishankar and Mahadevan prepared false cash/credit bills as if certain gift and/or stationery items were purchased from the stationery firm. Thus, they obtained a pecuniary advantage to the tune of Rs.2.07 lakh. Mahadevan was acquitted, according to an official press release. Special Correspondent
Expo on Tamil computing
CHENNAI: State Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi will inaugurate a three-day conference and exposition on Tamil computing and printing being organised by The Madras Printers Lithographers Association and Kanitamizh Sangam (Association for Tamil Computing) at Valluvar Kottam on Friday, a press release said.
The expo will feature technical advancements in the field of printing, the use of software and digital printing technologies. Firms involved in the development of Tamil software will participate in the expo. Former Anna University Vice-Chancellor M. Anandakrishnan and State Information Technology Secretary C Chandramouli will participate. The expo will be on from 9.30 am till 8.30 pm on all days. Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Air India on Thursday announced introduction of a new economy class fare for travel between Chennai and Mumbai.
The new fare would be Rs. 1,700 (excluding applicable taxes). Similar fare is available for travel from Mumbai to Chennai also. The fare is valid for travel commencing on or before March 31, the release said.
The Air India operates three flights from Chennai to Mumbai - AI 641 daily night departures; AI 661 on Tuesdays departure at 10.10 a.m. and AI 663 on Thursdays, which departs at 10.10 a.m., the release added. Staff Reporter
Advance reservation period extended
CHENNAI: The Railway Ministry has extended the advance reservation period from 60 to 90 days (excluding the date of journey) on experimental basis with effect from March 1.
Southern Railway is to run a special train to Nagercoil to clear the extra rush of passengers. Train No. 0613 will leave Egmore at 8.15 pm on February 3 and arrive at Nagercoil at 10.45 am the next day.
The special will stop at Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudunagar, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Vanchi Maniyachchi and Tirunelveli. The composition of the train will be 1 AC 2-tier, 1 AC 3-tier, 10 sleeper class, 3 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches. Special Correspondent
