The road over bridge works across the railway crossing on the Ganapathy-Avarampalayam road will be completed in 18 months. Laying the foundation for the road over bridge here on Thursday Highways Minister M.P. Swaminathan said the traffic across the crossing was 11 lakh train vehicle units. More than 10,000 vehicles crossed the gate every day. The gate was closed 63 times a day. Trains from Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore and Tiruchi to Kerala passed through the crossing.

The cost estimate for the project was Rs. 22.55 crore from the State Government and Rs. 5.50 crore from the Railways.

The 0.5 km long bridge would be 12 metres wide. It would have service lanes and footpaths with storm water drains.

A subway would be built to help pedestrians cross the railway track.

The Minister said that during the last five years, 19 railway bridges were sanctioned for Coimbatore at a total project cost of Rs. 455.58 crore. As many as 11 of these were sanctioned in the city.

Works were on for project. Estimation and inspection works were on for 10 more bridges. Eight bridges would be outside the city and the total cost of these would be Rs. 126 crore. Works were on for six of these, he said.
