KUMBAKONAM: Light vehicles will be allowed on bridge across Kollidam at Anaikarai near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district from June 15, according to M. S. Shanmugham, District Collector.
The bridge developed cracks a month back and traffic was stopped on the bridge to take up temporary repair works at a cost of Rs. six lakhs.
These works are nearing completion and the collector inspected the works on Tuesday.
The Collector said that road on the bridge has been partitioned with the construction of a wall like structure.
Now two-way movement is not possible on the bridge. Only light vehicles from one side will be allowed.
After monitoring for one month, a decision on allowing all vehicles i.e. heavy and light will be decided.
Meanwhile a project report for Rs. 128 crores has been prepared and submitted to the Government for construction of a new bridge at Anaikarai. Construction of Neerathanallur and Madanathur bridge across Kollidam will also be taken up soon, the collector said.
At present buses going to Chennai are taking a round about way to reach the city.
