MADURAI: In an inebriated mood at a posh hotel’s bar, situated on the Alagarkoil Road, two groups of friends exchanged blows with broken empty bottles in which four persons were injured on Saturday.

Police said that at around 11 p.m., a wordy altercation between the two groups turned violent. As commotion prevailed inside the bar, a team of police personnel from Tallakulam Police Station rushed to the spot.

Police identified the names of those involved in the brawl as V. Narayanan of Shenoy Nagar, T. Radhakrishnan of Madhichiyam, Jayakumar of Othapatti Karupayoorani and Ismail of Ramasami Nagar Pudur and Shyam, a college student.

Based on complaints received from both sides, cases under IPC Sections 294 (using abusive language in public place) and 341 (use of weapons) were registered.

Youth killed in brawl

A. Manikandan (23) of M.K. Puram was allegedly murdered by a person who was in a drunken state here on Sunday.

Police said that at around 5.30 p.m., the control room received a call about a brawl between two and three persons near South Gate area. When a police team rushed to the spot, Manikandan was lying in a pool of blood and his friend Jayakumar (29) had received a few stab injuries. Preliminary inquiries revealed that they were attacked by Annamalai of the same locality after they had a wordy altercation.

The police recovered the weapon from Annamalai. While Manikandan died on admission, his accomplice is undergoing treatment at the Government Rajaji Hospital. South Gate police have registered a case of murder and are investigating.
