Coimbatore, Erode teams emerge winners in state junior volleyball championship
On a cool Wednesday evening, the atmosphere at the BHEL Community Centre floodlit volleyball courts was simply electric.
The summit clashes in the boys' and girls' sections of the State junior volleyball championship kept the audience glued to their seats. Powerful spikes, deft placements and acrobatic retrievals by the players earned thunderous applause from the crowd.
The Coimbatore and Erode teams deservingly emerged winners in the boys and girls categories respectively. And with a sense of achievement writ large on their faces, the winners held aloft the trophies.
The four-day tournament was organised by the Tiruchi District Volleyball Association (TDVA) and BHEL. It attracted 25 boys teams and 21 girls teams.
“The tournament was held in Tiruchi after a gap of eight years. It was a well contested event as the teams gave their best in pursuit of glory,” said Thanga. Pichayappa, secretary, TDVA.Tiruchi boys and girls teams started off well in the tournament, but lost in the quarterfinals much to the disappointment of the local audience.
“The loss of the Tiruchi teams in no way affected the attendance as the fans came in large numbers and enjoyed every bit of action happening in the middle,” Mr. Pichayappa added.
T.S. Balan, former Indian spiker, whose presence added attraction to the proceedings on the final day, observed that conduct of such events in the district, would go a long way in popularising volleyball among the youth.
K.N. Ramajayam, president, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, gave away the prizes.
