Tirupur: A bomb threat to Jaiva Bhai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School situated, near the railway station caused flutter in the city on Thursday.
A thorough search conducted by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad later proved that the threat was a hoax.
The threat was received in the form of a telephone call at the police control room in Coimbatore at about 10 a.m., with the caller identifying himself as ‘Santosh’ and a resident of a particular area.
Senior police officials said that a youth, who had been residing in that address with the name, had been taken into the custody for questioning.
The mobile number, which was registered in the caller ID at the control room, was not found to be matching his.
The police later praised the presence of mind displayed by headmistress of the Jaiva Bhai school, Vijaya Anandam, as soon she received a message from the police asking her to vacate entire children from the campus. Since a panicked evacuation of 7,285 students studying in the school, one of the highest enrolment in a government sector-school in the country, could cause a stampede, the headmistress asked the children to leave the school as if allowing them to prepare for the quarterly examination commencing on Friday. “The calm handling of the situation also avoided what could have possibly triggered the panic button across the city,” police officials pointed out.
