Coimbatore: The Special Court for Bomb Blast cases K. Uthirapathy on Wednesday heard the pleas of 38 accused who are on bail.
The arguments on sentence by counsel Bhavani B Mohan representing these accused have been posted for August 28.
The accused said they were in no way connected with the case and pleaded for lesser punishment in the event of court deciding to award punishments. They also sought setting off of the trial period against the conviction and exemption from imposition of any fine considering their economic conditions.
The judge asked the accused and the counsel to finalise a schedule and inform the court before August 28 to commence the hearing/argument on sentence in respect of the 70 accused found guilty of the charge of conspiracy.
The judge also sought the prosecution to explain the guiding principles and precedents on whether the sentences could be given concurrently or consecutively, the mitigating circumstances of the accused (in respect of commission of offence and the circumstances that made the prosecuting agency find them guilty), whether the remission of sentence practiced by the prison department would be applicable to these accused in the event of the conviction period slightly exceeding the nine-and-a-half years of trial period undergone in prison.
