VIRUDHUNAGAR: The entire town of Virudhunagar was left in the dark, following a fire accident at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board 110 KV sub-station on Friday evening. Power is unlikely to resume on Saturday night too, according to official sources.
The TNEB is said to have lost properties worth several lakh rupees in the blaze.
Within a few minutes after resumption of power supply after a day-long power shutdown effected to carry out special maintenance work, fire broke out at the sub-station leaving the town in total darkness.
Fire and Rescue Service personnel, led by Divisional Fire Officer, C. Vasantharaj, put out the flames within 20 minutes.
The officials "failed" in their attempt to provide power supply to the town through `back-feeding' and the residents had to put up with the power cut. Official sources said that the chances of power resumption on Saturday night were remote.
"The cause of the accident is under investigation," the Superintending Engineer, Gururaj, said.
