Every day minimum 2,000 are sold in Erode
ERODE: With the onset of Sabarimala season, hundreds of Ayyappa devotees in blue, black and saffron dhotis visit temples in Erode.
The dhotis are produced in Erode. A screen printer Jagadesh of Narayanavalasu said: "This year demand for the coloured dhotis is very high than that in previous years." He said the dhotis with `Samiye Saranam Ayappa' legend had been sent to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Mumbai. The inscription was printed in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Most devotees preferred black colour.
Another producer Ramasamy said many screen printers were doing only job work. Production and despatch of the dhotis were going on round-the-clock, Mr Ramasamy said.
Every day minimum 2,000 dhotis are sold in Erode in retail and more than one lakh in wholesale.
Screen printers said last year Ayyappa dhotis worth Rs 15 crore were sold.
They expect that before December dhotis worth Rs 25 crore will be sold.
