The 158th birth anniversary of U.Ve.Swaminatha Iyer, popularly known as "Thamizh Thaththa" was celebrated at Uthamadhanapuram, birth place of the Tamil Scholar, in Tiruvarur district on Sunday.

Collector S.Natarajan garlanded the bust of Swaminatha Iyer at the memorial (Iyer's house has been converted into a memorial) at Uthamadhanapuram.

If not for Swaminatha Iyer, Tamil literature would have lost several rare manuscripts and books, he said.

“Gems retrieved”

"Because of him we were able to retrieve several literary gems of Tamil language including the Pathupattu and Etthuthogai. We should create a website and upload the books collected by him," the Collector said.

Tamil Scholars belonging to various Tamil organisations garlanded the bust. Durai Kanu, Papanasam MLA, among others participated in the function.
