To clear the backlog in garbage disposal and clear clogged drains, the City Municipal Corporation has initiated a 20-day mass cleaning campaign ‘Big Sweep’ in all the 60 Wards from Thursday.

Officials said that shortage of workforce has resulted in delay in carrying out routine works in the Wards.

The special drive would ensure that sanitation was maintained properly.

As many as 120 workers were involved in clearing clogged drains, removal of garbage, debris, unauthorised posters and banners on corporation properties and whitewashing corporation buildings in four Wards.

The drive would be carried out in all the Wards covering four zones till April 16.

The drive began in Mullai Nagar (Ward 23) in Suramangalam, Venkatapathi Chetty Road (Ward 29) in Hasthampatti, Jothi Talkies Road (Ward 35) in Ammapet and Kurinji Nagar (Ward 60) in Kondalampatti Zone.

Officials said that after the arrival of 350 stainless steel bins and 22 vehicles, purchased at a cost of Rs. 5.40 crore, solid waste management would get a boost.

“This is a major purchase by the civic body in recent years,” said the officials.

Officials said that committees would be formed in each Ward.

Saplings would be planted during rainy season.

Mayor S. Soundappan inaugurated the drive at Mullai Nagar in Suramangalam in the presence of Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan; Zone Chairman; Councillors; and members of residential welfare association.
