Police are on the look out for the gang which stole batteries from the mobile phone transmission tower at Pettai near here on Friday early morning.

When a group of unidentified persons tried to steal the batteries powering the Base Transmission Station of a private mobile phone operator at Pettai in the early hours of Friday, the security devise attached to the battery alerted the service provider’s supervisor, who in turn informed the police.

Even before the police could reach the spot, the thieves had removed 13 of the 24 batteries and loaded them in a multi-utility vehicle.

On seeing the police, the culprits escaped from the spot in their vehicle. After a hot chase by the police, they abandoned the vehicle, which bore a Kerala registration (KL – 16 E – 207) at Kailaasapuram near Tirunelveli Junction along with the batteries and escaped.

Investigations are on to nab the culprits involved in the attempt.
