TIRUCHI: Rich tributes were paid to freedom fighter and revolutionary Bhagat Singh during his centenary celebrations organised by Directorate of Information and Public Relations here on Friday.
Led by Transport Minister K. N. Nehru, people from various walks of life who spoke on the occasion said that Bhagat Singh was a role model for the present younger generation. The National Press Day was also celebrated on the occasion and speakers lauded the role of the national press in protecting democracy.
Mr. Nehru recalled the sacrifices made by the freedom fighter during the freedom movement and termed him as a committed revolutionary. It was due to the contributions of such patriots that the country remained secular and united, the minister said.
His heroic deeds always aroused admiration and respect throughout the country. Nehru said the State Government always gave top priority to honouring the heroes of the freedom struggle.
On the importance of the National Press Day, the Minister said the Chief Minister always took pride in calling himself a journalist. The press in the country in general and in the State in particular has been playing a constructive role and the criticisms on the functioning of the administration has been taken in the right spirit, he added.
Collector Ashish Vachhani said ‘Shahid’ Bhagat Singh was a determined warrior and never bowed his head to the oppressive colonial regime. Competitions were conducted for school and college students on the National Press Day. Mr. Nehru gave away prizes.
