Two-wheeler riders urged to wear helmets
With the number of accidents, particularly those involving two-wheelers rising, the Nilgiris police organized a two-wheeler campaign at Coonoor on Saturday to create awareness about the benefits of wearing helmets.
They were assisted by members of the Two Wheeler Workshops Association and an agency, Asindhya Automobiles. A motorcycle rally marked the campaign.
Flagging off the rally, Deputy Superintendent of Police, M.Madasamy, pointed out that motorcyclists should always adopt the, “Better Safe Than Sorry” attitude.
In tune with this, they should make wearing of helmets a habit as it would save their lives if they were involved in accidents.
Pointing out that the campaign was also to stress the need to follow road rules as the number of vehicles has increased considerably and the existing infrastructure is inadequate, he said that motorists should ensure that they maintain a safe distance from the vehicles preceding and following them.
Regretting that the majority of the accidents are due to carelessness, Mr.Madasamy said that motorists should not throw caution to the winds by using mobile phones while driving.
Stating that over speeding can only lead to disaster, he said that people should never get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.
Since their vehicles can be stopped and checked at any time and at any place by the officials concerned, the records should always be kept in a handy place, it was also pointed out.
