Taking cue from the stress on implementing and promoting Kannada in the public sphere at the recently concluded 77 {+t} {+h} Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to take steps to facilitate the usage of the language starting with its premises.

To start with, all the officials have been directed to converse and give out all information compulsorily in Kannada to visitors. Advertising agencies registered with the BBMP should display writing first in Kannada, then in English if they want to avoid being penalised, a circular said. The same will apply to “Sulabh Shauchalayas”, the public toilets under the BBMP. Shops, hotels, petrol stations and showrooms located within BBMP limits will also have to put up signboards in Kannada and use English secondarily.

For the complete implementation of the usage of the language in the administration, officials and workers have been asked to maintain records in Kannada as well as conduct administrative matters only in Kannada failing which action will be taken against them.

Also, names of places written on bus-stops and spelt wrongly should be rectified as early as possible. The Kannada words in the logo of the corporation used in publicity material should be legible and prominent.
