Child labour has for long been banned in the country.
Yet, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seemed ignorant of the fact that a garbage contractor in K.R. Puram is employing children.
An alert resident of the neighbourhood brought this crime to the notice of The Hindu .
Wishing to remain anonymous, she said she had noticed a young boy, clearly underage, segregating garbage at the back of a tipper autorickshaw over the past three to four days.
Careful not to draw the attention of the autorickshaw driver, she said she has been making small talk every day with the child, who admitted that he was just eight.
“Today, I gave him some chocolates and he was beaming. The BBMP, which a government agency, must take stringent action against the contractor and rescue the child,” she added.
When contacted, BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel said labour laws were stringent and employing children is a punishable offence.
He told The Hindu the BBMP would look into the matter and initiate stringent action against the contractor.
