CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to consider the application of a trust in Vellore district to start a law college on merits and in accordance with the law, and send its inspection committee to check whether infrastructure and other facilities were available as per norms and standards, and pass appropriate orders.

In its interim order on a petition filed by the Shri Swarnavinayakar Educational Charitable and Rural Welfare Trust, Justice P. Jyothimani said that the BCI should pass the order within six weeks. The Judge said that just because the council had completed its inspection and passed an order, the petitioner could not start the college; the Tamil Nadu government had to grant a No Objection Certificate.

The writ petition has been posted for final disposal on January 5 next year.
