The Corporation health officials seized three tonnes of plastics of less than 40 microns in thickness and disposable plastic cups from shops during a raid conducted here on Thursday.
City Health Officer (in-charge) H. Ramachandran told reporters that fines to a total of Rs. 50,000 were slapped on the owners of the shops from where the banned plastic items were recovered.
Of the three tonne seized, as much as two tonnes of plastics were seized from a single outlet which was involved in the wholesale business of packing materials like wrappers and boxes.
The owner of the said shop from where the major chunk of seizure happened first resisted the Corporation officials and prevented them from entering into the premises. It was only after the intervention of the police officials, the shop owner allowed the Corporation team to inspect the premises.
Over 150 shops situated in Perumal Koil street, Arisikadai Street, Govindagounder street and nearby areas were checked during the day.
