Tuticorin: Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, donated a passenger van to Vithya Prakasam, a special school for the mentally retarded children here on Wednesday.
G. Nagamal Reddy, Managing Director, TMB, Tuticorin, handed over the key to the Minister for Social Welfare, P. Geetha Jeevan, in the presence of Collector G. Prakash, at a function held at Muthammal Colony.
She said the administration and management of such schools should take necessary steps to remain more active on a par with schools in Chennai. Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi has set aside Rs.25 crore in the larger interest of such schools. A sum of Rs.500 was being extended on a monthly basis to as many as 20,000 mentally retarded children.
Mayor R. Kasthuri Thangam, S. Selvan Rajadurai, General Manager, TMB, T. Kavitha, Head Mistress, Special school, V.S. Karunakaran, Tuticorin Union President, M. Arumugam, President, Sankaraperi Town Panchayat, R. Pramela, Vice President, Sankaraperi Town Panchayat and the parents of the children were present.
