Banana crop in more than 100 acres was damaged during the heavy rains that lashed many parts of Erode district during the last few days.

Farmers have reported heavy losses as most of the trees were in the fruit-bearing stage. Banana trees were uprooted completely in the squally weather that the district experienced over the past few days.

The preliminary estimates after a survey conducted by the Horticulture Department identified that more than one lakh trees in TN Palayam and Bhavanisagar blocks in the district had been damaged in the strong winds. The worst affected block was TN Palayam, where more than 60,000 plantains were damaged. Over 44,000 plantains were damaged in Bhavanisagar block.
