CHENNAI: Commotion prevailed for sometime at the Government Women and Children’s Hospital in Egmore on Friday morning after one of the patients discovered that the baby she gave birth to was missing.

Two women, Ammu and Thangam, who were admitted to the maternity hospital, gave birth on December 17. Ammu of Tiruttani had given birth to a baby boy and S.Thangam of Alandur a baby girl. Ammu has a two-year-old boy and Thangam has two daughters. According to hospital sources, relatives of the two women had allegedly suggested that the babies be swapped.

An ambulance driver alerted the hospital authorities after seeing the baby boy being taken out of the hospital by the family of Thangam.

The police posted in the hospital intercepted the family and during interrogation by senior hospital authorities it was found that the babies were swapped.

The babies were restored to their biological mothers.
