ERODE: A baby canal at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs will be formed in the Orathupalayam reservoir and the work will begin from January 4, said Orathupalayam Reservoir High Level Committee Chairman S. Sivaraman on Tuesday, after convening the committee meeting at the Collectorate here.

He said that due to the release of contaminated water in the Noyyal river by some textile dyers of Tirupur, the reservoir was affected and hundreds of domestic and agricultural wells in the area were percolated with the contaminated water. Some days back, the entire water from the reservoir was released and now no water was stored in the reservoir.

To avert the pollution problems, a baby canal would be formed in the reservoir and the water flowing from Tirupur area would be allowed in the canal to drain out into the Noyyal river. Meantime the Orathupalayam reservoir would be desilted, Mr. Sivaraman said.

Sediment disposal

He said that discussions were made about the disposal of the sediments collected from the Orathupalayam reservoir and where it should be deposited. The compensation for the affected farmers would be decided later. He said that the committee would inspect the reservoir on January 5.
