Babri Masjid anniversary passes off peacefully

The 20{+t}{+h}anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition passed of peacefully in the district amid visible police presence at vital spots, including bus stands, railway station, and places of workshop. Police patrol teams crisscrossed the city in vehicles. At several spots, posses of personnel kept vigil.

Various Muslim organisations observed the day by organising demonstrations across the district. Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) members, including women, staged a demonstration at Chinthamani pressing their demands, including urging the Centre to construct Babri Masjid in the place where it stood.

Popular Front of India observed the day as anti-fascist day and organised a seminar in Thuraiyur. The speakers urged the government to punish those who were responsible for the destruction of the masjid and rebuild the masjid on the same site.

At Puthur, 21 Hindu Munnani volunteers were taken into custody when they staged a demonstration demanding construction of a temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

Representatives of the MDMK, CPI (M), CPI, VCK and other parties expressed their solidarity with the demands of Tamilzhaga Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam for a debate on the Liberhan Commission report in Parliament, and punishment for the perpetrators of Babri Masjid demolition.
