A 10-day cultural campaign against illicit arrack got off to a start in the district on Thursday.

The campaign organised by the government seeks to raise awareness against illicit arrack, its impact on society and the rehabilitation measures implemented by the government for reformed bootleggers. The message would be spread through folk arts and street plays.

Collector Jayashree Muralidharan inaugurated the campaign near the Central Bus Stand in the city.

The campaign would cover Tiruverumbur, Lalgudi, Jeeyapuram, Thuraiyur, Musiri, Manapparai, Panchapur, Thottiyam, Ariyamangalam and Valanadu areas over the next few days, an official release said.

Meera Parameswari, Assistant Commissioner (Excise), and other officials were present.
