Aid given for purchase of refrigerated van
Dharmapuri: District Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal on Thursday gave away Manimeghalai awards to best performing self-help groups (SHGs) and panchayat-level federations (PLFs) in the district.
Speaking at a function, the Collector said that the SHG movement was evolved in 1989 in Dharmapuri district to pave way for the economic empowerment of women.
There were a total of 9,000 SHGs in Dharmapuri district. Of this, 5,222 groups had been registered with Mahalir Thittam. The Bedrahalli panchayat-level federation, which had bagged the Manimeghalai award at the State-level, had made the whole district proud. The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, he said.
The award-winning SHGs and PLFs had carried out various activities including conduct of intensive awareness campaigns against female infanticide, rehabilitation of bonded labourers and running of part-time ration shops in the district.
The group members had carried out programmes to educate illiterate women, formed a monitoring committee to prevent trafficking of children and women and participated in the gram sabha meetings.
Mr. Bansal asked SHGs in the district to make efforts to get Manimeghalai awards at the State level. SHGs should serve as a bridge between the Government and the people for effective delivery of various government schemes, he said.
He appealed to non-governmental organisations to aid in the economic empowerment of SHGs. The Collector also disbursed financial assistance of Rs. 4.81 lakh to Bedrahalli PLF for purchase of refrigerated van to transport cut flowers.
