KUMBAKONAM: Thirubuvanam Silk Weavers Co-operative Society, popularly known as Thico silks, has been awarded ISO 9001:2008 certificate by BSI, Chennai, according to S.V.Kandasamy, Deputy Director and Special Officer of the society.

In a press release issued here on Saturday, Mr. Kandasamy said that already the society has got the ISO 9001:2000 certificate. During audit by BSI, Chennai, the society was asked to upgrade itself to receive the ISO 9001:2008 certificate as per new regulations.

Accordingly steps were taken to improve the standards and all parameters met, and BSI, after an assessment had given the new certificate. The society had been doing business to the tune of Rs. 34 crore on an average every year. It was registered on November 12, 1955 and started functioning from November 24, 1955. Technical upgradation had been done according to requirements every now and then, he said.

It has also won the President of India award for best design and also gold medals for a variety of saris.
