Permitted to carry five children below the age of 14
No alterations should be made in the autos so as to provide additional seating
The autos are not allowed to pick up passengers at least 200 feet before the bus stops
SALEM: Stern action will be taken if autorickshaws are found carrying persons more than the permitted seating capacity.
According to Regional Transport Officers Suresh (Salem West) and Umasakthi (Salem East), the Madras High Court issued directions to be strictly adhered in the case of three-seater autorickshaws found violating permit conditions and plying in competition with mini buses picking up passengers at the bus stops.
An autorickshaw could carry only three adult passengers or five children below the age of 14 years. No alterations should be made in the autos so as to provide additional seating capacity more than the permitted limit. The conductor should not travel in the autos along with the driver. The autos are not allowed to stop and pick up passengers at least 200 feet before the bus stops. The autos should be parked only in the parking zones earmarked for this purpose, identified by the Regional Transport Authorities. The regional transport officials conducted checks in Salem recently and seized 20 autos found violating the rules. If these vehicles were found violating rules again, the permits would be cancelled.
