A majority of the autorickshaw drivers in the town went on a strike on Thursday with the demand that the United Nations should hold a referendum in Sri Lanka for the creation of Tamil Eelam.

They wanted to United Nations Human Rights Council to launch an independent probe into the alleged human rights violations committed by the Sri Lankan administration and the army during the final stages of the “ethnic conflict.” Students from various colleges organised a signature campaign in various parts of the district.
