The suitcase contained 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver coins and ornaments

CHENNAI: An autorickshaw driver returned a suitcase containing 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver coins and ornaments, and original house document to its owners hours after they left it behind in his vehicle.

According to police, the thirty-year-old Vijay Kumar, driver of the autorickshaw, belonging to Renukambal Nagar, Vysarpadi, was on his regular savari (ride) on Saturday evening when a group of women, who were part of a marriage party, hired the three-wheeler to the Community Hall on Raja Street in Perambur.

The marriage party, including the bride Nizambi of Ma. Po. Si Street, Vysarpadi, her aunt Shameem (40) and grandmother, got down at the community hall, (the marriage venue) leaving behind a suitcase containing the bride’s jewellery in the autorickshaw.

Later when searching for the suitcase, they realised their mistake. Police said Ms.Shameem lodged a complaint with the Sembium police around 8.30 p.m about the suitcase. Police launched a hunt for the autorickshaw and its driver.

In the meantime, Vijay Kumar came to the community hall around 10.30 p.m and handed over the suitcase, including the jewellery, left behind in his vehicle. Ms.Nizambi’s marriage took place on Sunday as scheduled, police added.
