A 37-year-old man hacked his ailing father to death in Kodambakkam on Friday morning following a dispute over the latter's property in Thiruneermalai.

Kodambakkam police identified the suspect as Srinivasan, a taxi driver and a resident of Mangadu.

Srinivasan had a long rivalry with his step-father Muthuswamy (74), an ex-serviceman, over the latter not transferring the property in Thiruneermalai to his name. “Around 6.30 a.m. on Friday, he came to Muthuswamy's house after his relative and caretaker left. He confronted him over the property and also demanded he give him his autorickshaw and some cash.

When the father refused, Srinivasan hacked him with a knife,” said an investigating officer. Neighbours came in after hearing Muthuswamy's cries and rushed him to the Government Royapettah Hospital, but the senior citizen succumbed en route.

Srinivasan was arrested and the murder weapon was seized, sources added.
