Attur will receive more water under new scheme: Minister

“It is the DMK government, whenever in power, that has undertaken various welfare schemes including water supply schemes for the benefit of the people,” said Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam.

Distributing free gas stoves and other welfare assistance to beneficiaries here on Saturday, the Minister pointed out that it was during the DMK regime, that the Mettur-Salem-Attur Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme had been executed.

But since the population in Attur had grown, it was decided to execute a separate water supply scheme for Salem city at a cost of Rs. 283 crore and works on the same had begun.

The Minister further added that once the new scheme was completed, Attur would receive more quantum of water.

To ease the stress on the scheme, a separate water supply scheme at a cost of Rs. 270 crore would supply water to Ayothiapattinam, Vazhapadi, Attur, Gengavall and Talavasal and 1,345 wayside habitations.

For this, the government had given administrative sanction, he said.

“The new scheme also will be completed soon to meet the protected drinking water needs of the people of Attur and its surrounding areas,” he pointed out.

Schemes

He also listed various welfare assistance measures and development schemes taken up in Attur block, which included special roads scheme to the tune of Rs. 3.60 crore and new school buildings.

So far 1.07 lakh had received free colour TVs in Attur block and 849.76 acres had been disbursed under the free two-acre land scheme.

A total of 2,418 beneficiaries received free house site pattas and 11,658 had received free gas stoves.

Under the social welfare schemes, 1.48 lakh had benefitted.

He said that it was Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who had fulfilled all his election promises and it was this government that had been responsible for development activities in Tamil Nadu.

He also distributed welfare assistance to 1,455 beneficiaries. Congress MLA M. R. Sundaram, RDO V. Sirajjunisa, Attur Municipal Chairperson S. Poonkodi, Tahsildhar T. Subramanian and others spoke.

The Minister also distributed free gas stoves to 666 persons and other welfare assistance at another function in Othiyathur village in Gengavalli block.

Gengavalli tahsildhar S. Razia Begum, District Supply Officer S. S. Elayas Basha and others spoke. District Collector J. Chandrakumar presided over the meetings at both places.
