Members of various parties stage demonstration

SALEM: Members of various political parties including MDMK, PMK, BJP, CPI and VCK staged a demonstration here on Friday condemning the police attack on lawyers in Madras High Court and also demanding immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Main Opposition parties including the DMK and AIADMK, did not take part. The district level leaders, who took part in the agitation, raised slogans against the police and condemned the Central Government for inaction in Lankan issue.

They wanted the government to take stringent action against the police officers who unleashed violence against lawyers.

They asked the general public to extend support to their cause.

As the city police did not give permission for the agitation, 75 members were arrested.

Meanwhile, continuing their boycott of courts, lawyers of the Salem Bar Association observed a fast to protest against the police highhandedness against lawyers in Madras High Court. Its president Rajasekaran presided.
