A meeting of the expert committee on formation of outer ring buffer zone along the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) will be held at Sri Ramu College of Arts and Science in Pollachi on July 10. The public hearing will solicit suggestions and opinions from the people and elected representatives.

A release said that the erstwhile Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as Anaimalai Tiger Reserve on April 2, 2007. Accordingly, a government order dated December 28, 2007 called for formation of buffer zones in the inner ring and outer ring of the ATR for conservation of tiger population.

An expert committee was constituted in this regard comprising Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden besides Chief Conservator of Forests (Bio-diversity) and Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife).

It also includes a representative of a non-governmental organisation and a social scientist. Field Director of the Reserve H. Basuvaraju is the secretary of the expert committee.

The meeting will be attended by Divisional Forest Officers of jurisdictions abutting the ATR. The meeting will elicit opinions and suggestions from the gram sabhas and panchayat members on the formation of outer buffer zone along the ATR boundary.
