ERODE: Officials of all the government departments should ensure timely response to the requests from the public seeking information under the Right to Information Act, Collector R. Sudalaikannan has said.

Inaugurating a training programme conducted for the officials on various provisions of the Act here on Thursday, the Collector said that officials should not think that providing information to the people as a burden. People have the right to ask information from the government departments. There should not be any reluctance in providing information to the public without unnecessary delays.

Objective

The main objective of the Act was to bring in greater transparency in the administration and enable the people get information related to various processes carried out by the government, he pointed out.

Transparency

The officials should co-operate with the district administration to ensure transparency in governance, he said and urged them to understand all the important aspects mentioned in the Act in order to serve the people better.

The Right to Information Act should be implemented effectively in the district, he stressed.

The Collector also appealed to the people to take advantage of the Act to get information required for them from the government departments.

Procedure

The procedures to request information under the Act had been simplified and anyone could ask information, he added.

The programme highlighted the procedures to be followed while furnishing information to the people and various other aspects of the Act.
