CHENNAI: The theme of this year's National Maritime Day celebrations will be ‘Seafaring – A career of opportunities.' “There is a shortage of seafarers and there are nearly 50,000 ships sailing across the world. According to estimates, 1.98 lakh crew members and officers are required in the next five years, which must be met with training programmes,” said Capt. K. Vivekanand, member of the National Maritime Day celebration committee and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Vels University. He was addressing media persons here on Saturday on the 47th National Maritime Day celebrations on April 5, an initiative of the Director-General of Shipping. According to Capt. S. Bhardwaj, Vice-Chancellor, AMET University, various awareness programmes would be conducted in schools as part of the celebrations. “Many courses have come up to allow mid-level transition for those already in the industry,” he said.
