Criteria on appointment of enumerators, supervisors discussed at training for Corporation officials

MADURAI: The groundwork for the decennial census began in the city with the first leg of training for Corporation officials on Tuesday.

The Assistant Director, Directorate of Census Operation, Chennai, J. Lincoln Gnanadas, said that this time the census work would be combined with data collection for preparing national population register (NPR). The Government had proposed to give unique identity number to each individual above the age of 15 years.

Personal details, including name, address, impressions of all fingers and thumbs, and photographs, would be collected for the NPR along with house-listing and house census. The training programme dwelt upon the criteria on appointment of enumerators and supervisors, mapping the blocks for each individual enumerator. Every enumerator, all Government teachers or staff of Government departments and local bodies, would cover 150 houses or 600 to 750 people. Each supervisor will have six enumerators under them.

Mr. Gnanadas said that NPR works had been completed in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. It would be carried out in other parts between June 1 and July 15. The population census would be taken up between February 9 and February 28 simultaneously across the nation.

He wanted every employee involved in the laborious task to take it seriously as the census was important for planning all welfare measures.

Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine said that for many employees the census work might be new and hence they should learn all the procedures thoroughly.

Chief Engineer K. Sakthivel and Assistant Commissioners were among those present.
