Coimbatore: The State Government is embarking on an ambitious plan to convert 9,000 km of roads under the control of the State Highways Department into two-lane in a phased manner, Minister for Highways Vellakoil M.P. Saminathan said on Friday.
He was speaking at a function organised to lay the stone for construction of road overbridges (ROBs) across level crossings at Nanjundapuram on the Ramanathapuram – Podanur Road and on Kurichi – Nachipalayam Road. He said Tamil Nadu accounted for more number of level-crossings and based on the train – vehicle ratio at level-crossings, the congested ones were being taken up for construction of ROBs. During the previous regime in the State, only seven ROBs were constructed in lieu of level-crossings whereas the present Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime had obtained permission from the Ministry of Railways for construction of 106. In the railway budget also, the Railway Ministry had accorded sanction for 21, he added.
