Top NLC official held for graft

CHENNAI: Officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a senior officer of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) on charges of taking bribe from a civil contractor here on Thursday night.

According to sources in the agency, the contractor was awarded the work of renovating the suite of the Chairman and Managing Director, NLC, at ‘Neyveli House’ on the EVR Salai in Chennai.

On completion of work, General Manager P. Kirupanandan (58) allegedly demanded Rs.50,000 to sanction the bill. After much delay, the final bill was cleared but the contractor was told that if the bribe money was not paid, his name would be blacklisted.

The contractor lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Branch, which registered a case.A special team laid a trap and arrested Kirupanandan in his official chamber soon after he took Rs.50,000 from the contractor.

During searches at the residence of the accused on Burkit Road in T. Nagar, investigators seized Rs.22 lakh, bank passbooks showing a balance of Rs.16 lakh and movable/immovable property totally worth about Rs.1 crore.
