Coimbatore: A mock Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) leak and fire drill was enacted at the Indane LPG bottling plant of the Indian Oil Corporation near Negamam to check preparedness of the machinery during disaster management.

Gas leak

A gas leak and subsequent fire accident alarm siren was sounded and the agencies concerned in handling and mitigating the disaster situation plunged into action. Collector P. Umanath, Additional Divisional Fire Officer Pradeep, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, Kaliannan, Chief Manager (LPG), K. Mani and others took part.

Members of the mutual aid agencies such as Bharat Petroleum and Hindusthan Petroleum Corporation officials also rushed into for rescue and restoration. Fire tenders and ambulance from the Government Hospital were also rushed.

Mechanism

Plant Manager, V. Chandrasekharan said the objective of such an exercise was to check the preparedness of the machinery and to identify areas were response mechanism could be improved upon. Immediately after the mock drill a de-briefing was also conducted.
