Udhagamandalam: Neglect of senior citizens has over the years become a source of serious concern, said the Nilgiris Collector, Anandrao V. Patil, at Gudalur on Thursday.
Participating in a function organised to observe World Elders Day, he lamented “though we have learnt to be humane from our elders, we are not displaying that quality when it comes to dealing with them.”
Stating that it was something to be ashamed of, he commended the people who were taking care of the elders who had been thrown by the wayside by their families.
Pointing out that in helping the poor, destitute, downtrodden, widows etc the Tamil Nadu Government was showing the way to other States, Mr. Patil said that the schemes that were being implemented in the State were far-sighted.
The Old-Age Pension scheme was benefiting about 9,300 persons in the Nilgiris district.
Mr. Patil adorned some of the elders with shawls.
Cultural programmes staged by the elders marked the occasion. The Revenue Divisional Officer, Gudalur, C.S. Harikrishnan and the Gudalur Municipal Chairperson, Annabhuvaneshwari, were among those who participated.
