KRISHNAGIRI: Thirty-one students were selected to undergo surgery in a multi-specialty hospital in Salem free of cost. These children were selected at special medical camps conducted in panchayat unions by the district administration.
These students are studying in schools run by the District Disabled Welfare Trust with the assistance of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan scheme.
The children were given a send off by Collector V.K. Shanmugam here on Friday. The children were taken to Salem Hospital in a special bus in Krishnagiri. The special bus was flagged off by the Collector.
District Rehabilitation Officer C. Manimaran, District Coordinator Ramu and Special Trainers attached to the ten Panchayat Unions were present on the occasion.
Apart from this, the district administration conducted special camps for the disabled persons in all the ten panchayat unions. Disabled persons were screened at the camps and were given National Identity Card to get various government benefits like concession in bus, train fare, priority in appointments, free treatment at hospitals etc. Many persons were given monthly assistance, says a press release.
