CHENNAI: An aged couple were relieved of 12 sovereigns in the MGR Nagar police station limits here on Wednesday.

Tirumalai (65) and his wife Kamakshi (60) of Saligramam were returning by bus after visiting a temple in Tiruvannamalai when a person started talking to him.

Claiming to be an influential person in government offices, the suspect promised to arrange old age pension of Rs. 2,000 p.m. for them.

He asked them to alight at Ashok Pillar and took them to a government office. He asked them to wait and went in. Later, he gave Rs. 2,000 to Kamakshi, saying that her application was approved and the first pension disbursed. He asked her to go inside to get photographed. Saying that the pension was meant for poor people, he asked to remove her chains and pack them in a paper. Soon after the couple went into the office, the accused fled.

Officials told Kamakshi that no such pension papers had been received. The paper packet contained sand and small stones. The MGR Nagar police registered a case.
